with D.D.T. proved successful and the crop was saved.

(a) Buildings.

Nearly all of this Dept's Buildings have

suffered, but it is hoped to soon have them habitable.

(e) Staff. At first, lack of staff hampered the work, but now

pre-war staff have started to return and further diffi-

culties through lack of staff are not anticipated.

(f) Transportation. Lack of transportation still hampers

the checking of properties controlled by this dept.

3. EDUCATION.

(a) Government Schools. The small District School in Wanchai

is the only Government School habitable, and was re-opened

on 12th. Oct. Two are requisitioned by the Military

Authorities and the remainder are either completely destroyed

or seriously looted. Private school premises have therefore

been requisitioned, and four schools are now running in Hong-

Kong and two in Kowloon, with a total enrolment of 1200.

(b) Grant in Aid Schools. Of the 18 Grant Schools in 1941,

12 have re-opened. Total enrolment, over 6,000. Buildings

and equipment are for the most part intact as they were in

continuous occupation during the Japanese regime.

(c) Private Schools. Six subsidized and 63 private schools

receiving no subsidy have re-opened with a total enrolment

of over 6,000.

The total number of children attending schools in Hongkong is

therefore about 13,000.

(d) Staff. Masters. 110 have returned out of a total of 175.

The deaths of 10 have been reported.

Mistresses. 16 have returned out of a total of 35.
